Pallet Flow Rack
The USSI pallet flow rack is a high-density, dynamic storage solution designed for facilities that require strict FIFO pallet racking (First-In, First-Out) rotation. By utilizing a gravity flow rack design, pallets are loaded from the rear and glide on inclined rails to the front picking face, ensuring that inventory is always fresh and travel time is minimized.
Structural Stability for Gravity-Fed Demands
A pallet flow rack requires more structural precision than almost any other system. Because the pallets are constantly in motion on an incline, the rack must maintain a perfect, consistent slope under massive loads. USSI utilizes structural tubular steel to provide the necessary rigidity to prevent the “shelf-sag” or twisting that can cause pallets to get stuck in the lanes.
- Superior Torsional Strength: Our closed-tube columns offer significantly greater resistance to swaying and twisting than standard open-back C-channel racks. This is vital for maintaining the exact 1/2″ per foot pitch required for a reliable gravity flow rack.
- Impact-Resistant Engineering: In high-velocity flow environments, the front pick-face is subjected to constant activity. Tubular steel provides a higher strength-to-weight ratio, ensuring the system remains stable and plumb even in 24/7 operations.
- Maintenance Longevity: The smooth, enclosed surfaces of tubular steel are easier to clean and less susceptible to the structural fatigue common in high-volume “through-put” distribution centers.
Key Operational Facts:
- Storage Density: Can increase storage capacity compared to selective racking by utilizing lanes up to 20 pallets deep.
- Inventory Flow: Operates on a strict FIFO pallet racking basis, ensuring the first pallet loaded is the first pallet retrieved.
- Labor Efficiency: By separating loading and picking into two different aisles, you eliminate forklift interference and significantly reduce travel time.
- Safety Integration: Includes automatic speed controllers, entry guides, and end-stops to safely manage the movement of heavy loads through your warehouse storage systems.
Key Features & Benefits
- Maximum Throughput: The gravity flow rack design keeps a constant “pick-ready” pallet at the aisle face at all times, reducing the time spent searching for SKUs.
- Space Optimization: Minimizes the number of forklift aisles required, allowing you to maximize the vertical and horizontal “cube” of your warehouse.
- Reduced Equipment Costs: Because forklifts don’t need to enter the pallet flow rack structure (unlike Drive-In systems), there is a significant reduction in rack damage and equipment wear-and-tear.
- Energy Efficiency: Ideal for temperature-controlled environments, as high-density storage reduces the amount of empty air that needs to be cooled.

Is Pallet Flow Racking Right for You?
It is a Perfect Fit If:
- You require strict FIFO pallet racking rotation.
- You have a high volume of the same SKU (typically 10+ pallets).
- You want to separate loading and picking traffic for safety and speed.
You Should Look at Alternatives If:
- You have hundreds of different SKUs with only 1 pallet each. See: Standard Rack
- You only have access to one aisle due to building constraints. See: Push-Back Rack
Ready to Streamline Your Workflow?
USSI handles the full lifecycle of your project, from custom engineering to professional installation. Our structural pallet flow rack systems provide the durability and reliability required to thrive in high-traffic distribution environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
The main difference is the inventory flow. A pallet flow rack is a FIFO (First-In, First-Out) system in which pallets are loaded at the back and picked from the front. A push-back rack is a LIFO (Last-In, First-Out) system in which loading and picking occur from the same aisle.
While older C-channel systems can experience “lane-hang” due to structural twisting, USSI’s use of structural tubular steel ensures the lanes stay perfectly aligned. We also integrate “anti-backup” devices and speed controllers to ensure smooth movement.
For a gravity flow rack to work efficiently, pallets should be in good condition. Standard GMA pallets work best; however, we can engineer custom roller or wheel configurations for plastic pallets or specialized containers.
Systems can typically range from 2 to 20 pallets deep. For extremely deep lanes, we use specialized braking systems to ensure pallet speed is controlled from the entry point to the pick face.
